Everybody at camp has chores to do not least those connected with cooking as it won't do itself. Here, this boy is taking the eyes out of the potatoes and removing the skins which was something I had to learn myself in similar circumstances having not done this at home.
The satisfaction you get by now being able to do so is priceless.
Here the cubs are helping with cutting and scooping out the melon with adult help given knives are sharp and these two look a bit young to trusted with a very sharp knife.
There looks to be some part done B-B-Q kebabs ready to go over the fire the other boys in the background are preparing a safe distance away from the marquee to have with it.
I'd bet when cooked they'd be delicious!
While I have some limits with my abilities with knives, I also do help out where I can whenever I am away with
Still at camp on what looks very much like a warm bright summer's day, sat on a plastic box, a cub helps out a scout doing fried sausages possibly for hot dogs slicing the rolls ready insert the sausage and onions.
I can tell you know now whenever I've been camping or a similar activity with others away, there's never been a hot dog or burger left which isn't about my appetite but rather the universal appeal of cooked meats on a flame so there's no waste.
I think a few times I have mentioned about how as a cub or scout YOU contribute to everyone's good time by doing something, looking at making a fire, cooking and putting up tents.
This time around we're preparing sandwiches starting with slicing the loaf down the middle from front to back before applying the spread and filling then cutting along. with a team of three.
There also appears to be what I suspect are bottles of limeaid or its local equivalent at the far end of the table to share out although I'd say ginger beer or dandelion and burdock is what we loved.
Knives always had a fascination for me particularly pen knives and pocket knifes such as the "Swiss Army Knife" and in Scouting knives do play an important part as tools when going camping or exploring.

The pack and its leader are altogether at on logs that are like improvised benches armed with the pans and billy cans ready to chop and peel food into in groups ready to go on the big fire to cook their meal. Fresh food stuffs are generally speaking much healthier so provided you get from on location it makes sense to use them preparing yourself which is also a skill worth teaching through scouting even if it is just how to peel and cut carrots and potatoes.
