Looking smart

Taking one's salute suitably dressed, this boy looks really smart in a summer short sleeved dress shirt that can be badged as he earns them and with good pockets which I'd have to say are really most useful.
The neckerchief plays a important part in the dress of anyone in scouting and having been folded and fastened around (either under the collar or over) needs the tails securing and this is done with a "Woggle" that they are inserted and fastened into.

These come in different designs according to country, unit (cub, scout, rover etc) and role such as leader, Sixer etc.

Above is a Wolf Cub woggle.

B P's birthday edition

Today we mark the birthday of Robert Baden-Powell born in 1857, the founder of Scouting for boys and through his wife also Girl Guiding too whose experiences during the Boer War have continued to inspire a generations of young people helping to raise good healthy adults too.
The world may well of changed since his death in 1941 in many ways but the principals that unpin scouting are timeless and in so many ways he was ahead of the time in understanding what children and young people actually need to develop.

This Cub Scout in spirit salutes him for what that movements ideals are and the difference it is making to my life

Acknowledgment

I did earlier on in this blog refer to making that salute, one of the very first things you learn and here we see it in action as one scout greats another also making the scouting handshake.

One doesn't know how long it has taken these two to meet up and one thing about today compared to when I grew up was we didn't have instant communication at hand so when you were away from your home apart from a call box you put money in to make a telephone call you were very much one your own.

It appears the scout on the right has brought the units Standard with him apart from anything else that might be of use such as a map and compass in the traditional hessian rucksack.
